Eating Organic – It Really Is Simple!

It seems like everyone is talking about organic foods these days. They’ve probably even caught your eye in the produce department at your local grocery store. But what exactly is organic produce, and how can you add them to your family’s diet?

Organic produce is grown without pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or ionizing radiation. Organic produce is said to be better for the environment, safer for your family and typically fresher because they don’t contain preservatives.

You may find that organic produce tends to be more expensive than conventional produce. Why?  Here are a few of the reasons:

  • Input costs are 25-40% higher due to the cost of materials, fertilizer and the labor for weeding.
  • The cost of land is more expensive.  This is mostly due to the 3-year investment to become certified organic.
  • Depending on the time of the year, the yields can be 25-40% less than conventional.
  • With a strategy in geographic isolation and diversification in mind, crops are moved more frequently in order to battle weather and pest problems.  When farming organic, there are typically several production areas at one time, while conventional farms utilize one.

Still looking for ideas? I want to show you some of my favorite ways to prepare each of these ready-to-use veggie bags from Josie’s Organics.

Organic Broccoli Florets

Josie’s ready-to-use broccoli florets are great for snacking.  You also can add them to your favorite vegetable soup recipe, or you can also easily add them to any salad, pasta or stir-fry. I also like adding broccoli to various smoothies for the nutritional value, especially the dietary fiber and potassium.

One of the best ways to use these broccoli florets is by making this Simple Oven-Roasted Broccoli. Even your kids will love this veggie dish. And it really is simple. Try it tonight!

Organic Cauliflower Florets

It’s easy to eat Josie’s Organics Cauliflower Florets raw or to grate them on a fresh salad. And for many people, cauliflower is known as the low-carb cooking hack. There are so many recipes out there that can help you get creative with using cauliflower: pizza crusts, bread/bun substitutes, mac and cheese, brownies and many more!

One of my favorite ways to prepare cauliflower is oven roasting it. And for a spicy kick, I like to make this Sriracha Ginger Cauliflower.  Even if someone in your family doesn’t like spicy foods, I guarantee they’ll love this roasted cauliflower recipe from Josie’s!

Organic Vegetable Medley

Josie's Organics Vegetable Medley

Josie’s Organics Vegetable Medley includes broccoli, cauliflower and baby carrots. The first thing that I think of for this medley is a vegetable tray. You can keep it simple and just put out the fresh cut veg on a platter with a dip and your other favorite veggies, or you can create a fun veggie tray for various holidays and celebrations.

You can also use the medley bag in other recipes, like Kroger’s Savory Green Carrot Smoothie.  The recipe calls for carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and spinach. And with the Josie’s Vegetable Medley bag, you get three of the four veggies needed in the smoothie which helps simplify the shopping and keeps it cost effective.

Josie’s Organics’ Vegetable Medley is also great for roasting, steaming and sautéing. Preparing one bag with three different vegetables means less work for you…but more flavor on the dinner table!
